Would you buy this house?

We had a great long weekend, unfortunately we didn't get as much done as I would have liked and I started lots of projects but never finished them.
I did come across this house for sale and thought I would ask your opinion on it, this is the real estate description.....
Just a few years old is this large 4 bedroom home with double garage set on 6 acres in Milthorpe. Featuring a dam, bore, generous double shed, chook shed, fenced off area for the animals and plenty more. Amazing value in such a great location. You really must make time to see this opportunity. Blinds, Curtains, Dishwasher, Insect screens, Range hood, External TV antenna, Built-in wardrobes, Clothes line, Fixed floor coverings, Light fittings, Stove.
Not too bad so far but I still don't like the way people paint the cornices and the skirting boards in dark colours and I am not sure that the blue goes that well with the colour of the carpet or the curtains. Hmmmmm, interesting ......................... But wait, there's more and this is the best.....
????????? WHY ?????????
I know I am really conservative when it comes to the use of colour in my house and I believe that the big stuff like tiles etc should be fairly neutral, then you can switch your accessories around really easily when you get sick of a particular colour.
Does anyone like the colour choices in this house? What would you look for if you were buying a house? could you look past the colour choices of the current owners. We had to when we bought our house but we were fortunate that a lot of people couldn't see past the bright colours and we got the house for a great price.
I don't mean to offend anyone, sorry if I did.
I don't like it but if you do then you can buy it, just visit here for more details.
I'd love to hear your opinion.
Have a great day!
xx

  1. Hi Nellie tend to agree that things look much better neutral and stand the test over time going with whites or creams. This house looks large to me and I would definetly look past the colours and think what great spaces this house has to offer. Much easier to by a large home that pay for an extension later. Look past the current colour scheme is the best tip I can offer and work on the larger picture of painting it all white and fresh. All the houses we have ever lived in I fell in love with the space not the current colours. Have a great week. Sandy x

  2. I agree with Sandy, the kitchen made me gasp as I soooo wasn't expecting to see such crazy bright but dark colours. I think people would be put off this house by the colours, so could be a good buy to snap up. The kitchen is a fairly easy fix as it has great bones but the bathroom.... it would take a bit of doing to get rid of those colours. I think it all depends on how much work you see yourself wanting to do on a house.

I hate all the mission brown on our house and although we've painted most of the windows and trim to get rid of it, the things like the eaves, gutters and roof tiles are going to stay that colour as we don't have the time or want to spend the money fixing something that was actually painted so well quite recently, but the colour bugs me everytime I look at it. It's that sort of thing I think you have to toss up.

Oooo... house buying is so tricky isn't it! Keep us posted :)

  3. My goodness, there's a lot of colour going on there!! Unless people really know what they are doing I really think they should stick to neutrals, especially for things like tiles - they're a pain to change! It makes me feel better about my kitchen with pink tiles, burgundy bench tops and timber doors!!!

  4. Holy cow! Only how old? It looks like a time warp back to the 70's or 80's.

I go for nuetrals all the time, and am not really into slabs of colour...this is over the top, but is fixable, if you don't mind a lot of painting, oh and changing some tiles.

  5. I have to agree that paint would not deter me if the house and location were what I was after. Tile is a little scary. I usually love apple green but not so much when it's tile and paired with the blue floor. But it might look a whole lot better with white walls and trim. The tile all looks new. The kitchen color were more of a shocker for me. Lots of primer. The floor is neutral! Love the stove. Oh and I haven't a clue what a bore or a chook shed are!

  6. Oh, what a shame...that kitchen has really great bones and could be so cute.
Any cosmetic elements, like paint selections, wouldn't deter me one bit when looking at buying a home though I'm sure lot's of people would pass up a ghastly kitchen like that. Like you said, you got your home for a great price because other potential buyers couldn't see past the previous owners decorating. Oh well, all the better for you and other's with a bit of vision!

  7. This is a classic example of a homeowner that needs to call me to stage this place. It needs a huge amount of space. The kitchen although ghastly has a nice stove and those bar stools would look great if they fit with the look. Would I buy it. If the price was right and I could make money. Sometimes houses like these are priced well below market vaue and linger because a buyer can not see past that dreadful decor. For some reason, I often find that crazy paint jobs like this are often very poorly done, so the "quick fix paint job" is not always as easy as it appears.

I certainly wouldn;t want my morning coffee in that kitchen!!!

Thanks for showing us...I love crazy house real estate pics.

  9. maybe someone was color-blind?

or those are the (bad) colors of their favorite sports team...

the house i'm in now, had a kitchen that was painted lipstick RED and was bright Yellow/orange on the ceiling...it hurt your eyes.

  10. Look beyond.... way beyond those colours and you might find that it is actually a really good find. Remember paint is your friend and does magic! ;-)

  11. These colours wouldn't put me off if everything else about the house was perfect, although I would want to get it for a price that left me with enough $ to do the required work on it. It looks quite spacious and seems to have fairly modern fittings.
The one thing I hate about our house is the cream joinery. Next time we buy I will be really fussy about this feature as it's too expensive to change out all your aluminium windows/doors.

  12. OMG, it's hideous! I can look past color of things that are easily changed... but the key is 'easily'!

The green bathroom tile is - interesting... but the kitchen is quite painful. Maybe it means it's a great price?

  14. For resale purposes I agree it should be neutral all the way. However, from the perspective of purchaser, I could see past the garish colours - the bones look great. In definite need of a paintbrush though! Michelle

  15. What the hell were they thinking?? But don't forget that a colour scheme is so personal They must have had a thing for green and blue.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Those colors are a little too bright for me too! However, if the price was right and the location was great...maybe I would buy it and then start painting!!!

  17. Hi Nellie,
Wow this house is hideous. However it has a lot of potential. You could do a lot of great things to these rooms and end up with aa lovely home . Don't you just love realestate.com.au.
    Have a great week.

  18. Oh my, I have to admit these color choices made me cringe. If I bought this house, painting would be the number one priority! And I would change the tiles in the bathroom...interesting choice there. It looks like it could be a great house otherwise! It looks like the bathroom was designed with accessibility in mind because of how the shower is, but at the same time I would rather like a change in the tile or something so that the shower feels a little more blocked off from the rest of the bathroom.

  19. Wow! I would probably find it hard to look past the colours on first inspection, there really is a lot of work to be done to calm down the colour palette in this house. If the colours were just on the walls it probably wouldn't be so bad but on tiles and cupboards means lots of work. xo

P.S. Thank you for the blog award Nellie:)

  20. Oh no! Sometimes you think why on earth someone would do this...but I guess everyone is entitled to their own taste.

  21. Wow, well that's bold! It's hard to look past the cosmetic parts of the house that can be changed and focus on the structure of the home. But it is quite a hassle to change tile. (Personally, they shouldn't even make tile in colors like that! Ha!)

This house belongs to my relative. Thankfully they don't surf blogs.
How dare you belittle anothers taste. This has been a much loved family house - with much emphasis on a loving family life.
Not only do you criticise the house yourself you encourage others to do the same for your own amusement.
Shame on you. It is a pity you don't channel your spare time into doing some good for a worthwhile cause.

Holy gumballs, that hurt my eyes! As far as all that mess goes, it is all transformable. The house sounds basic, but the property sounds fantastic, I would be all over it, and just think, so many people would be put off, it will probably go for a bargain!!

  28. Nell,
Eeeeh! gads! I hate to say anything bad about anyones design style but in this case I would say we need to paint! Funny what people do to a Place to make it home!!!
I know that when you go looking for a home you don't always get what you want, yet at times it's a great house just bad choices were made in color and fixtures along with tile and flooring. If it is a great buy well built, great layout and a little love and cash can fix almost anything. It's just seeing throuth the "what were they thinking part" :)

You are so cute to have posted this.

  29. Hi nellie,
I think it is fun to look at homes and kind of re-decorate them in your head! When you are seriously interested in buying a property, it is great to get other peoples opinions; especially when everyone you are asking has a special interest in interiors and design. I also think that some people can be too touchy and take things too seriously (I am obviously refering to comment by anonymous.)
    Have a beautiful day Nellie,

  30. If you're going to sell your house - neutrals people, neutrals!! But, you're right, you need to see past the current colour schemes..unfortunately, not all buyers can. Rachaelxx

  31. Sorry, No I would not buy it. By the time the colors are corrected you could have invested in a home more to your liking from the start.

    ReplyDelete
  32. haha, you now me...i love neutral colors, but I believe we need to be flexible at times when it comes to colors because psychologically it will affect us, but this house i think is interesting too!

    ReplyDelete
  33. hmmm...I agree with many...colours are easy to fix but you most likely have to replace the kitchen and bathrooms that have permanent fixtures. From there I would add up the costs...mix in how much you love the house and the area, decide how much time and energy you want to devote to renovations (some people love it and others like me, dread it) and see where you come out.

    All sounds very intriguing!!

  34. Well I am a big fan of colour, but this is the pretty bad. However I tend to agree with everyone else - if you can look beyond the colours and still see potential in the house then it's worth a second look. Colour and tiles can be changed - not so with poor layout and aspect.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes I love a challenge! Great potential!

  36. Hi Nellie!!! well... I'm going straight to the point: I don't like at all the colours of this house!!! I agree with you, it's better to have neutral base (tile, forniture) and then play with textiles and details. But maybe a very creative lady can see potentials in this house!! I think I will be afraid of these colours and simply run away!!! =)

    Hugs!

  37. OMG that is horrible! That is so over the top that even people who can look past most things would have a problem with this one. I wonder who will buy it and i wonder how long it will be on the market for... W O W who ever did that had to of been colour blind. Sorry am i being rude? Ooops I couldnt hold it in lol

  38. I'm sure the people that lived there loved it but it is definitely not my cup of tea!! What happened to 'blue and green should never be seen'!! :)
